Phil Mickelson has become a polarizing figure in the professional golfing world over the past several years, and he is back in the media on Sunday night after what was a historic win for Scottie Scheffler at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

Scheffler tied the PGA Tour scoring record with his 253 for the weekend, which was 31-shots under par. Scheffler matched the record set by Justin Thomas at the 2017 Sony Open and equaled six years later by Ludvig Åberg at the RSM Classic.

Where Phil Mickelson comes into the equation is based on a “freezing cold take” that he had about Scheffler earlier this season. While Scottie is widely regarded as the best golfer in the world right now, and is No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking for a reason, Mickelson had this to say back on March 16 of this year:

“Here’s a hot take — Does Scottie win in 2025 before the Ryder Cup? I don’t think so.”

While it was an abnormal winless drought from Scheffler to start the season, predicting that he would go into the summer months without a victory was a bit rich.

Of course, Mickelson has never shied away from saying what is on his mind and being a polarizing figure. Here’s a look at how fans reacted to his “cold take.”

“To the surprise of absolutely no one, this hot take proved false,” one fan said.

“It took 1.5 months for Phil’s take to become ice cold,” Golf.com wrote on Twitter.

It’s no surprise that Scheffler was able to get a victory on tour sooner rather than later. What made this one special was that he was able to do it at a tournament that he grew up watching down in Texas.

“My family was all able to be here, and it was just really, really special memories, and I think at times it all comes crashing down to me at once,” Scheffler said. “We have a lot of great memories as kids coming to watch this tournament. I just dreamed to be able to play in it, and it’s more of a dream to be able to win it.”

Now the question begs to be asked: How many more times will Scheffler win before the Ryder Cup?
