As the Travelers Championship unfolds with intense competition and thrilling performances, the PGA Tour community was struck by somber news this weekend. Frederick W. Smith, the visionary founder of FedEx and a towering figure in both business and golf sponsorship, has passed away at the age of 80.

Smith, whose leadership transformed FedEx into a global logistics giant, also left a lasting legacy on the PGA Tour. Under his direction, FedEx became one of the sport’s most influential sponsors.

On Sunday PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan released a heartfelt statement mourning Smith’s passing.

“The PGA TOUR is saddened to learn of the passing of Frederick W. Smith,” Monahan remarked. “Fred and his company made significant contributions to the growth and popularity of PGA TOUR golf.

“… We mourn the loss of a legendary business leader and philanthropist and offer our condolences to his family.”

Since 1986, FedEx has played a pivotal role in professional golf, beginning as the title sponsor of the Memphis-area tournament and later establishing the FedExCup in 2007.

This season-long competition, culminating in the FedExCup Playoffs, redefined the PGA Tour’s structure and has crowned champions like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

Smith’s influence went beyond golf as a Marine Corps veteran and Yale graduate, he founded FedEx in 1971, launching operations with 14 aircraft and just under 400 employees. His idea, born from a college term paper, revolutionized global delivery.

FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam paid tribute, calling him the heart and soul of FedEx… a mentor to many and a source of inspiration to all.”

As play continues at the Travelers Championship, the Tour reflects on Smith’s remarkable contributions, both to the game and to the world. His legacy, like the company he built, will endure for generations.
