Tuesday brought a mixed bag of news for LIV Golf as the OWGR confirmed that their events will start awarding world ranking points, following a recent review.

LIV Golf tournaments have never been eligible for world ranking points, and as a result, most of their players have dropped in the standings, making it much harder for them to qualify for major championships.

The league submitted another application in 2025, and just before their season opener in Riyadh, they learned that points would now be awarded.

However, the news is not entirely positive for LIV.

The OWGR noted that there are still several areas where LIV falls short of the full criteria. In the past, one sticking point has been how the team format runs alongside the individual competition.

Even so, players finishing in the top 10 at LIV events will now earn points. To give some perspective, the winner in Riyadh will receive a similar number of points to whoever finishes third at the WM Phoenix Open.

Tenth place in Saudi Arabia will net roughly the same amount as 29th place at TPC Scottsdale.

PGA Tour responds to LIV Golf’s world ranking points decision

There have been plenty of strange comments from both sides in recent months, especially with players like Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed leaving LIV ahead of the 2026 season.

The PGA Tour’s response to the announcement was also surprising, as they expressed respect for the OWGR’s decision.

On balance, it seems like a reasonable decision from the OWGR. LIV still have not fully addressed all of the issues that initially kept them from receiving points.

However, it never made sense for their players to go largely unrecognised in the rankings while competing in high-profile events.

LIV supporters may not be completely satisfied with how things turned out, but it is a solution that appears fair across the board.
