Patrick Mahomes has all the tricks in his bag.

This is a new one. At least as far as we know at home.

With his Chiefs facing fourth and less-than-1 at their own 40-yard line Sunday, Kansas City lined up in a bunch formation against the Las Vegas Raiders. Mahomes barked a hard count as tight end Noah Gray went into motion in the backfield.

CBS’ Tony Romo gave up on the play actually happening.

“Trying to draw them off sides,” Romo said.

A hot mic then picked up Mahomes appearing to likewise give up on the play.

“This f***ing never f***ing works, man,” Mahomes said as the Raiders declined to jump.

This drew a chuckle from Romo. But Mahomes hadn’t actually abandoned hope. The Chiefs snapped the ball, and Mahomes handed off to Kareem Hunt, who barreled forward for 3 yards and a first down.

Romo’s broadcast partner Jim Nantz chided Romo.

“You’d given up on that one,” Nantz declared.

Twelve plays later, Mahomes found Hollywood Brown on an eight-yard touchdown pass for a 14-0 Chiefs lead.

So did Mahomes actually fool the Raiders? There was no presnap movement from the Las Vegas defense to indicate that they’d given up on the play. But did anybody relax a little when Mahomes feigned defeat on the play after failing to draw them off-sides? It’s hard to say.

But he certainly fooled Romo. And the result of it all was a first down that led to a touchdown.

Well played, as usual, Patrick.
