The Chicago Blackhawks had a ton of success in the shootout throughout the years and that’s because the two most successful players in the shootout in NHL history both played a very long time during the team at the same time.

Patrick Kane, now with the Detroit Red Wings, scored in the shootout to pass Jonathan Toews’ NHL record of 52 shootout goals in his career. With Kane’s beautiful goal against the Seattle Kraken, he now sits number one with 53 goals in the shootout, and I don’t believe he’s done yet.

While Toews’ shooting percentage in the shootout is 47.27%, one of the best ever, Kane sits at 40.15% in the shootout, which is still very good.

Toews has scored 52 goals on 110 shots in the shootout. 20 of those goals have decided the game. Kane has a bit of an edge with 23 game-deciding goals, but has scored 53 times in 132 attempts.

Kane’s best season in the shootout came in 2007-08 when he scored seven times in nine shots. Only 20 players in NHL history have scored more shootout goals in a season than what the long-time Blackhawks star was able to accomplish in that season. Toews, on the other hand, scored eight times in 14 attempts in 2009-10 and seven times in 13 attempts in 2013-14.

This success in the shootout by the two most effective players all-time was key in the Blackhawks getting the extra point the majority of the time when the game went past overtime.

Kane is continuing to help the surging Red Wings win right now and it appears as though Toews will sign back in the NHL for next season. It could be an interesting race to the end of their careers that we didn’t think we needed.
