CARMEL, Calif. – It didn’t take long for Oregon’s Sebastian Desoisa to become a winner on U.S. soil.
The freshman from the British Territory of Gibraltar made just two bogeys across 54 holes to win the 2025 Preserve Golf Club Collegiate hosted by Cal Poly at Santa Lucia Preserve.
Desoisa got off to a hot start and never looked back, firing a blistering 8-under 64 in the opening round Monday morning to take the solo lead, which he never relinquished. He extended it to four with a 66 in the second round.
Desoisa had a comfortable lead entering the final round but anyone who watches golf knows that can be a curse as much as it can be a blessing. He didn’t flinch, though, firing a 69 on Tuesday to cruise to a five-shot victory at 17 under for the tournament. Grand Canyon’s Mans Boje was the runner-up at 12 under.
The wire-to-wire victory was an impressive display from Desoisa, who has only been living stateside for about two months and arrived at Oregon fresh off an accomplished junior amateur career in Europe. But 6,000 miles away from his family in Gibraltar and his home club in the south of Spain, he seems to be settling in nicely.
Desoisa propelled Oregon to a third-place finish, but No. 25 BYU capped off a strong fall season with its second victory of the year. It was an all-around effort from the Cougars, who had three players in the top five and ended the week 29 under as a team. Tyson Shelley led the way for BYU, going 69-68-68 to grab solo third at 11 under, while Simon Kwon and Kihei Akina finished in a three-way tie for fifth with Long Beach State’s Jaden Huggins.
Huggins turned in a career-best 7-under 65 in the second round and along with Alejandro DeCastro (T-9) and Jack Cantlay (T-9), the younger brother of PGA Tour star Patrick Cantlay, helped lead the Beach to a final day charge and a runner-up finish as a team.
