Olympic women’s soccer tournament rules
The women’s soccer tournament differs from the structure of the men’s competition with 12 teams involved instead of 16. The top two teams in each group automatically qualify for the quarterfinals.
The remaining two quarterfinal places are taken by the best two third-place teams from the three groups which is decided based on the following criteria from their group stage performances.
- Points
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Fair play points in all group matches
- Drawing of lots.
Group stage: The group stage rewards teams with three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss. Teams are ranked on points with the first tiebreakers being (1) goal difference and (2) goals scored in that order. If teams are tied after the second tiebreaker, there are other predetermined criteria to separate them.
Knockout rounds: The top two teams in each group (six in total) plus two of the three third place sides move to a fixed bracket, single-elimination knockout round beginning with the quarterfinals, semifinals and the Gold medal final match.
