For the second time in three seasons, North Carolina basketball failed to reach the Round of 32 in March Madness, which is far below the standard of the Tar Heels. Thus, change is expected for the UNC basketball 2025-26 season, and that was going to be inevitable with the program’s second all-time leading scorer, RJ Davis, out of eligibility. Perhaps no singular player can replace what Davis provided the Carolina, but the team will utilize the college basketball transfer portal to land several players who can combine to fill Davis’ void.
One of those is wing Jonathan Powell, formerly of West Virginia. He’s the first player on the North Carolina basketball roster landed from the 2025-26 college basketball transfer portal but hopefully not the last. Who are other transfers that North Carolina can land to get back to its standard of competing for national championships? North Carolina basketball roster news
While Davis’ departure was expected, his backcourt mate in Elliot Cadeau leaving Chapel Hill wasn’t expected. He finished second in the ACC in assists last season and was fourth on the team in scoring in his sophomore year. However, Cadeau chose to trade in the Carolina Blue for Maize and Blue of Michigan as he joined the Wolverines from the transfer portal.
With UNC now needing to replace its starting backcourt, it has narrowed its focus on guard Naithan George from the portal. He started each of his two college seasons at Georgia Tech, and he was the only ACC player to average more assists than Cadeau did last year. George is also more of a scorer than the player he could potentially replace as UNC’s point guard, as he put up 12.3 points a year ago, compared to Cadeau’s 9.4. The sixth-ranked point guard in the portal, interest is mutual between George and UNC as the two had a Zoom call on Thursday, April 3 to discuss a potential future together.
