The No. 1 seed in the National League sure looked like it on Saturday, with the Milwaukee Brewers crushing the Chicago Cubs 9-3 after a red-hot first and second inning.
Though Cubs first baseman Michael Busch led the game off with a solo homer, it didn’t take long for the Milwaukee Brewers to pull to an insurmountable lead. The Brewers pulled to a 6-1 lead after the first inning with five RBI doubles or singles, and grew that lead to 9-1 after two more RBI singles in the second.

Ian Happ and Nico Hoerner added solo home runs of their own in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively. But it was far too late to undo the damage of Milwaukee’s opening innings. It didn’t help that Brewers starter Freddy Peralta had a stellar game of his own, with nine strikeouts in a 5.2 innings.
Milwaukee ended the game with a whopping 13 hits, and eight RBIs. Three of those RBIs came from left fielder Jackson Chourio, who broke records but was unfortunately pulled from the game after the second inning with hamstring tightness.
Chicago will now get a day off to regroup before returning to Milwaukee’s American Family Field for Game 2.
