New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole began his rehab assignment Tuesday night as he works his way back from an elbow injury.

Making his first starting appearance since spring training, Cole cruised through 3.1 scoreless innings pitched for the Double-A Somerset Patriots.

While Cole didn’t have an update on how many more rehab outings he would need, he does feel his return is close.

“Definitely close,” Cole told reporters after the outing. “I’m not sure how many more we need, but definitely closer rather than farther away. It should be right around the corner here.”

The reigning Cy Young Award winner seemed pleased with just about everything from the outing. His fastball sat between 94-97 MPH. He’s expected to make a second rehab start on Sunday in Somerset.

Cole wound up throwing 45 pitches, 34 of which were strikes. He allowed just two singles and no walks during his first outing on the mound since Spring Training.

The Yankees ace didn’t want to rule out a return before the end of June, and if it all goes according to plan, it seems he could be back well before that.
