Meet NASCAR’s New Danica Patrick (1:28)

A longtime NASCAR insider isn’t holding back on a possible return to Mexico City.

The NASCAR Cup Series arrived in Mexico this weekend. Despite photos of heavily armored cars accompanying NASCAR’s haulers into the country, the weekend went off without a hitch. It ended up being a great success for the sport.

Daniel Suarez, who is from Mexico, won the Xfinity Series race on Saturday night. On Sunday, Shane van Gisbergen took home the Cup Series checkered flag.

Roughly 100,000 fans were expected to be in attendance at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. But will NASCAR return to Mexico City for a race in 2025?

NASCAR has yet to commit to a return race. However, NASCAR senior executive Ben Kennedy is very hopeful that they will return.

“I would say for us, this is more of a strategic move as a sport to expand our footprint globally and internationally and to a new mass fan base,” Kennedy said. “Just being in a country with 90 million people and over 20 million people in the larger Mexico City metro alone, not in and of itself, this is a success.”

NASCAR president Steve Phelps made it clear how important the race was before Sunday’s green flag.

“We’ve had several game-changing firsts in recent years, but this one is different,” he said. “Racing here in Mexico City, amongst these passionate fans in such an impressive venue for the first time in NASCAR Cup Series history, is in a word, spectacular.

“Together, we are doing something that will be remembered in the history of our great sport.”

Meanwhile, longtime NASCAR insider Bob Pockrass has made it clear: the sport needs to return.

“Of course NASCAR should return to Mexico City next year,” he said on NASCAR on FOX.

NASCAR wants to grow its fan base and there are few better ways to do that than by holding races at different locations throughout the world.

Hopefully, we’ll see the sport return to Mexico City in 2025.
