TIMONIUM, Md. — Michigan State’s men’s golf team battled strong winds Sunday to post the third-lowest score of the day and finish in third place among 18 teams at the Big Ten Championships, played at the Baltimore Country Club.

The Spartans shot a 10-over par 290 in the final round, tied for the third-lowest score on the day. MSU finished the three-day, 54-hole event with a combined 14-over par 854 (281-283-290) and moved up five places after entering the third round tied for eighth.

UCLA came back from a six-shot deficit after Saturday’s second round, posting the best team round of the day with a 2-over par 282 and topped the field at 2-over par 856 (278-282-282) for the tournament. Illinois led through the first two rounds and finished in second place with a 3-over par 857 (270-282-291).

Behind the Spartans in third place, Oregon finished in fourth place (15-over par, 855) and Ohio State rounded out the top five (17-over par, 857).

“I can’t even begin to describe how proud I am of this team,” MSU coach Casey Lubahn said. “To do what these guys have done all semester and to grind and find a way to get to where we are today is a testament to the hard work, dedication and determination that they all have. We didn’t win, but we showed we can compete with the best and it’s one of the most rewarding Big Ten tournaments during my career.”

Sophomore Lorenzo Pinili completed a strong weekend of play with a 1-over par 71, despite the challenging conditions. He tied for fifth place overall with a 1-under par 209 (70-68-71) and was one of just six golfers in the field of 93 to finish under par.

By finishing among the top-five individuals, Pinili was selected to the Big Ten Championship All-Tournament Team.

Junior Caleb Bond bounced back from a difficult second round on Saturday (6-over par 76) with a 2-under par 68 in Sunday’s final round. He finished in 11th place with a 1-over par 211 (67-76-68). Bond’s round of 2-under par 68 was tied for the lowest in the entire field on Sunday and was one of five under-par rounds on the afternoon.

Sophomore Lucas Acevedo finished in a tie for 28th place with a 7-over par 217 (71-71-75). Following back-to-back rounds of 1-over par 71, Acevedo closed with a 5-over par 75.
