Mets skipper Carlos Mendoza confirmed on Monday what has long been suspected: right-hander Christian Scott will be called back up to start on Wednesday night against the Washington Nationals.

We’ve been saying he’s a big league pitcher. Now, especially with needing a spot in the rotation, it’s his time now,” Mendoza said on Monday in Washington.

Scott, one of the organization’s most exciting pitching prospects in recent memory, was called up earlier this season and made five starts before being sent down before the Mets departed for London in June.

With multiple off days in the June schedule, the Mets sent Scott down to keep him pitching regularly, though it was clear the club was limiting his pitches in all of his Triple-A appearances.

In his four starts with Syracuse, Scott didn’t pitch longer than 5.0 innings in any game, despite giving up a total of four earned runs.

“His last two (starts), I think he was up to 75, 80 (pitches),” Mendoza explained. “The ones prior, we wanted to keep it short and just kind of limit his pitches and things like that, and keep his arm in shape. … Knowing that he was going to be here at some point, we ramped it back up to 80, 85 pitches. So, he’s full go.”

In his five major league outings this season, Scott pitched to a 3.90 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP, striking out 25 batters in 27.2 innings.

With Tylor Megill back down in Triple-A, Scott could figure to stay in the rotation this time around, and there’s still a possibility that the Mets could go to a six-man rotation when Kodai Senga, who will make his first rehab start in Brooklyn on Wednesday, eventually returns in the second half.
