Buena High senior Brady McHenry fired a 7-under-par 67 and then birdied the first playoff hole to win the individual title at the CIF-SCGA SoCal boys golf regional championship at Los Serranos Golf Club in Chino Hills on Thursday, May 29.
McHenry sunk a birdie putt from around 10 feet to beat Hill Wang of La Serna on the first playoff hole after both finished tied after regulation play of the tournament, which serves as a qualifier for the state tournament. He was one of nine golfers — and the only local player — in the 120-player field to advance to the state tournament, which will be held at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach on June 3.
McHenry is the third Ventura County golfer to win the title, joining Westlake’s Brian VanHell (2002 and 2003) and Jake Katz (2010). He reached the state regional by shooting a 4-under 66 to finish third at the CIF-SS Northern Regional Individual Tournament on May 15 and then shooting a 72 at the CIF-Southern Section Individual Championship & SCGA Qualifying Tournament on May 22. McHenry also won the Channel League individual tournament to earn league MVP honors.
Two of McHenry’s Buena teammates, brothers Brandon and Adam Anderson, ended their sensational seasons by shooting an even-par 74 on Thursday. Brandon Anderson, a freshman, won the Northern Regional title and tied for sixth at the CIF-SS Individuals to reach the state regional. Adam Anderson, a senior, finished seventh at the Northern Regionals and shot a 73 at the CIF-SS Individuals.
A week after surviving six playoff holes at the CIF-SS Individuals to qualify for the state regional, Newbury Park sophomore Aidan Peters fired a 4-under 70 to tie for ninth, but could not advance out of a playoff to reach the state tournament.
Oaks Christian junior Graham Christopher finished with a 1-over 75 and sophomore Broxton Borck had a 2-over 76 to end their seasons. The two were instrumental in helping the Lions win the CIF-SS Division 2 team title on May 19.
