Mary Meeker has been called everything from “The Queen of the Internet” to “the Nostradamus of technology.” Add to the list first female winner of the team portion of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in its 80-year history. She and professional partner Keegan Bradley teamed to shoot 20-under 124 and won the title by one stroke.

Bradley shot 63 on Thursday at Spyglass Hill Golf Course but was 4 over through 10 holes for the day at Pebble Beach Golf Links on Friday. He eagled No. 2 and added four more birdies, including at No. 9, his last hole of the day, as he rallied to shoot 1-under 71.

Meeker, a 13 handicap and member at San Francisco Golf Club, joined the PGA Tour’s Board as an Independent Director in 2017, the first and still only female to serve in that role and have a seat at the table at the highest level of the professional game.

In the investment world, her annual info-packed presentation on the state of the internet is renowned as a tech industry event in its own right. Asked in an interview with Wired about the times she’s not with her iPad, she answered rarely.

“When I’m playing golf,” she said.

Meeker has a longstanding connection to golf, dating to a summer job working on the grounds crew and serving as captain of her high school golf team. She grew up in a small town in northeastern Indiana and graduated from DePaul University before earning an MBA from Cornell.

In 2011, after two decades on Wall Street she relocated to the Bay Area, becoming a venture capitalist at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, where she made bets on high-profile startups like Square, Spotify and Twitter. In 2018, Meeker started her own venture capital firm, Bond Capital, which is headquartered in San Francisco.

“I grew up around golf and am passionate about the sport,” Meeker said in the announcement of her board role. “I love practicing, playing, watching, competing and appreciating the artistry of golf course design. The PGA Tour is impressive — the players, the leadership and organizers, the volunteers and the business model, including the focus on local charities communities and global growth. It’s an honor to have a seat at the table to help participate in the growth of the game.”

Peter Malnati, who completed his term on the board as a player director at the end of last year, observed that Meeker has been a valuable resource and knowledgeable voice in the board room as the PGA Tour has dealt with unprecedented business challenges from a COVID-19 shutdown and re-start to the challenge of a rival league.

“One of the wisest people in that room is Mary,” Malnati told Golfweek. “I rely on her intelligence to help me wrap my head around conceptually all the changes re-shaping the professional landscape of golf.”
