Manchester City secured a 3-1 comeback victory over Newcastle United in the fifth round of the FA Cup at St James’ Park on Saturday, thanks to Omar Marmoush’s brace.

The hosts had the first chance of the game inside the opening 10 minutes as James Trafford parried a clearance into the path of Nick Woltemade, who saw his headed effort cleared off the line by Nico Gonzalez.

The Magpies’ early pressure was soon rewarded with the breakthrough in the 18th minute when Sandro Tonali played Harvey Barnes through on goal, who then curled into the top corner the opener.

At the half-hour mark, Aaron Ramsdale was quick to smother Savinho’s effort as City searched for the equaliser.

However, in the 39th minute, Ramsdale couldn’t keep the Brazilian out this time as he drew the Citizens level after Jeremy Doku’s cross struck his shin and nestled into the net.

Moments later, City could’ve taken the lead through Tijjani Reijnders after he was played through on goal by Savinho, but the Dutchman drilled his effort wide.

Two minutes after the restart, Marmoush fired the Citizens ahead after Matheus Nunes fired in a cross to the back post, and the Egyptian was there to finish from close range.

At the hour mark, Marmoush saw his effort parried away by Ramsdale, and Reijnders volleyed over the rebound as City searched for a third.

In the 65th minute, Marmoush increased the margin after he teed up with Nunes again before finding the top corner with a powerful strike.

City held on to see out the result and progress to the next round of the FA Cup and will be in the quarter-final draw on Monday alongside Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal.
