Trent Alexander-Arnold has announced that he is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. The English full-back confirmed what was an open secret via a video statement on his social networks. Arnold did not reveal where his next destination will be, but everything indicates that he will end up playing for Real Madrid.
“After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, the time has come for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season. This is by far the hardest decision I have ever had to make in my life.
Alexander-Arnold announces departure from Liverpool
I know many of you have been wondering why or have been frustrated that I haven’t talked about this yet, but it was always my intention to focus on what was best for the team, which was to secure number 20. This club has been my whole life, my whole world, for 20 years.
From the Academy until now, the support and affection I have felt from everyone, both inside and outside the club, will stay with me forever. I will be eternally in debt to them. But I’ve never known anything else, and this decision involves experiencing a new challenge, stepping out of my comfort zone and pushing myself both professionally and personally.
I have given my all every day I have been at this club, and I hope they feel that I have given back during my time here. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all: my coaches, my representatives, my teammates, the staff and our incredible fans, for the last 20 years.
I have been lucky enough to live my dreams here and I will never, ever take for granted the special moments I have been fortunate enough to experience with all of you. My love for this club will never die.
Criticism from the fans
The departure of the full-back has not gone down well with many Liverpool fans. During the season, the ‘red’ club’s supporters have hit out at Arnold, questioning his attitude and commitment to the club. Many of them see it as a betrayal to leave the club as a free agent, doing the opposite of players such as Van Dijk or Salah, who have decided to stay.
The responses to his latest post have been filled with insults and offensive comments towards the player. “Keep running, rat,” replied one fan, while the words “Judas” and “snake” were also common in the replies.
