In a recent report, A Bola mentioned that Liverpool are facing competition from Chelsea for Benfica defender Tomas Araujo. It has been stated that the Reds are in the running to acquire the services of the Portuguese talent this summer.

Araujo’s Impressive Form In Portuguese Football Last Season

Araujo managed to put in a string of solid performances at the centre of the Benfica defence in the previous campaign. The 23-year-old participated in 44 matches for the Portuguese outfit last season, scoring once and securing three assists in multiple competitions.

The Portuguese defensive ace gave a good account of himself when defending inside his half as he made 70 tackles, 23 blocks and 26 interceptions in Liga Portugal. He even distributed the ball accurately from the back after completing 85.2% of his attempted passes in the Portuguese first division (stats via fbref.com).

His current contract at the Portuguese club will run out in the summer of 2029. Thus, Liverpool would have to make a convincing offer if they are serious about bringing Araujo to Anfield this off-season.

Should Liverpool Boss Arne Slot Go For Araujo This Summer?

Araujo is a tough-tackling defender who can time his challenges well to make some important interceptions for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when required and can even play his way out from the back.

Standing at 1.87m, the Portuguese sensation is a strong presence in the air as well. However, there are some concerns over whether he would be able to maintain his good form in the Premier League if the Reds manage to snap him up this summer.

Araujo is primarily a central defender but can also fill in as a right-back or as a right-sided wide player if asked to do so. He would undoubtedly bring more bite and steel to Liverpool head coach Arne Slot’s defence.

At 23, Araujo has the potential to be a world-class defender someday. Therefore, it makes sense for the Merseyside club to go for a player of his quality in this transfer window. However, Slot needs to give Araujo some time before he can get the best out of the talented defender in Premier League football.
