The second round of the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club is off and running on Friday as golf’s most grueling test nears the halfway point.
Some of the best golfers in the world have been straight up baffled by the the overgrown rough and bunker locations. Even in favorable weather conditions, we’re once again seeing players struggle just to stay near par.
That means some of the biggest names are already in danger of missing the cut this weekend. We’ll be keeping an eye on which players are battling the cut line throughout the second round.

U.S. Open cut line rules and projections
After 36 holes, only the top 60 players and ties will continue onto Rounds 3 and 4. The rest of the 156-player field will be cut from competition.
According to DataGolf, the cut line should come into play well over par as expected. Round 2 began with the site projecting at 6-over par cut at 40.4 percent chance while there’s a 31.4 percent chance the cut is set at 7-over par.
Here are some of the most notable players who need a significant improvement on Friday to avoid heading home early.
Notable golfers in danger of missing 2025 U.S. Open cut
- Matt Vogt (+12): The amateur golfer, who is a professional dentist, needs to give his game a deep cleaning on Thursday night.
- Shane Lowry (+9): The PGA Tour veteran carded an eagle on No. 3 and still finished nine strokes over par.
- Justin Rose (+7): Rose nearly recovered from a brutal front nine before a double-bogey on his 18th hole undid his damage control.
- Justin Thomas (+6): Thomas only has one birdie on the day after going four-over on the front nine.
- Patrick Cantlay (+6): A similarly brutal front nine for Cantlay saw him settle for five bogeys.
- Akshay Bhatia (+6): Bhatia had just one birdie on seven bogeys in his first round.
- Cameron Smith (+5): It actually wasn’t a terrible day for Smith, but his five bogeys on no birdies leave him in danger.
