PALM BEACH GARDENS — Los Angeles Golf Club’s Collin Morikawa tried to keep things uncomplicated on the par-5 Quick Draw, the final hole of the March 2 TGL match against New York Golf Club at the SoFi Center.
Morikawa had a clear advantage to close out a win for LA after New York’s Cameron Young’s drive went out of bounds.

“If I miss a drive a little bit, I might be carrying to the front,” Morikawa said. “I have to commit to my shot. I told these guys, ‘Three good shots and we’ll be fine.’ Nothing’s ever easy.
“I miss a shot here, chunk a bunker shot there, you might win the hole. I had to really commit to the shots I was hitting.”

Morikawa put himself on the green in two shots and when Young missed a 33-foot putt, he conceded the hole, giving LA a 6-3 victory. LA already had clinched one of the four playoff spots in the six-team league by clinching the holes won for the season tiebreaker over New York.

LA currently is the No. 2 seed for the playoffs. Jupiter Golf Club and The Bay Golf Club will battle for the final playoff spot at 9 p.m. May 3. Jupiter can grab the fourth seed, The Bay can end up with either the No. 2, 3 or 4 spot, depending on results and tiebreakers.
Morikawa, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood secured a playoff spot on No. 8 Monday, then held off New York on the final few holes to finish 3-2 for the season.

New York cut the lead to 4-2 on No. 10, but Fleetwood made a critical 4-foot putt on No. 11 to keep the two-point lead. New York’s Matt Fitzpatrick made things interesting by making a 15-foot putt on No. 14 and New York threw its last hammer, making No. 15 worth two points.

“It was an iffy start. We played very well the last two matches,” Fleetwood said. “Last year we came out very, very hot and kind of cruised through it. This year has been different. It happened to start slow and gain momentum.
“We just have played well and stepped up to the occasion. I didn’t know how dodgy of a spot we were in the last two weeks. It feels really, really good to take that with us into the playoffs.”
LA was ousted in the first round of the TGL Playoffs in its first season last year. Rose plans for better results this time. The semifinals will be played on Tuesday, March 17 at 6:30 and 9 p.m.
“There’s always measure yourself against yourself,” Rose said. “There’s always an opportunity to go one better than last time. Especially last year we felt like we were one of the teams to beat in the playoffs and all of a sudden we got knocked out and the dream was over.

“That dream is still alive. It’s all about that day and preparing and executing. We trust each other to do that individually and collectively.”
Collin Morikawa likes LA’s chances in the playoffs
Morikawa is excited about LA’s chances in the playoffs.
“We’re resilient. We love what we’re doing,” he said. “It’s just getting ready. This isn’t something we take lightly, we want to do this really, really well. We’re kind of coming into form. We’ll see how that plays out in the playoffs.”
New York finished 1-4 for the regular season, although Ricky Fowler did not think his team played particularly badly.

“It seemed like all the matches, we tried to get something going and hit some good ones and then hit a poor shot or the other team would hit one closer,” Fowler said. “We were trying to get the ball rolling all season. I don’t think we played poorly, a lot of guys just played better than us on a given night.”
