Owens missed over a year of action due to a neck injury before his return at SummerSlam 2026. SmackDown GM Nick Aldis added Owens and Gunther to the number one contender’s bout with Sami Zayn and Finn Balor, making it a Fatal 4-Way match.

Kevin Owens picked up the victory at SummerSlam to become the number one contender. He hit Sami Zayn with a Stunner to win the match via pinfall. Zayn briefly held the Undisputed WWE Championship this year, but CM Punk returned in July and captured it from The Last Real Good Guy after a nine-day title reign.

Wrestling legend Bully Ray shared his thoughts on CM Punk calling Kevin Owens fat this past Friday night on SmackDown.

Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Bully Ray suggested that Punk’s comment was meaningless, as Owens has already been incredibly successful in WWE.

“Here’s the thing about the fat slob comment or whatever colorful language Punk used last week. Telling Kevin that he’s fat, or needs to wear a shirt, I believe means absolutely nothing. Because I believe fans realize that ok, he doesn’t go to the gym, he’s a little chubby and he wears a shirt. He’s also main evented WrestleMania against f**king Steve Austin, he headbutted Vince McMahon in the face, he tears down the house every time he’s in the ring, he knocks the promos out of the park, he gets massive pops blah blah blah I could go on all day,” he said.
