On Thursday, John Daly II made his PGA Tour debut as an amateur at the Puerto Rico Open. Just like his pops would, he came out swinging, making birdie at the par-4 first at Grand Reserve Golf Club. Off and running. Gripping and ripping it.

From there he played some unbelievably steady golf, collecting eight straight pars to finish his front nine and then shooting one under on the back for a two-under 70. As of now he sits inside the top 20.

While there are no strokes-gained stats or Shot Tracker in Puerto Rico, we can see that Daly II hit just eight of 14 fairways, only 10 of 18 greens and got up and down six out of eight times. In other words, as good of a start as it was for an amateur in their first-career PGA Tour round, there was still plenty to clean up afterward.

But, remember, this is John Daly’s son we are talking about. When asked if he was going to work on anything specific to keep the momentum rolling into Friday, he channeled his father with a legendary answer.

Yeah, that checks out. Also, recovery is all the rage right now. So, technically, he’s outsmarting his peers who are on their way to hit another bucket. When they’re tired on Friday, Daly II will be refreshed and ready. Check and mate.
