The two beloved legends even competed against each other at Crown Jewel 2025 in a match that’s regarded as the best of Cena’s retirement tour. In a recent interview with No-Contest Wrestling, John Cena revealed that during his chat with The Phenomenal One, the latter made it clear it was the right time for him to quit.

“AJ’s perspective was ‘My debut meant a lot to me. My circle of life where I retire. I leave the same day I came in at the same event. That’s a good explanation,” said Cena. (H/T – TJRWrestling)

John Cena almost didn’t face AJ Styles at Crown Jewel 2025

AJ Styles and John Cena put up a masterclass in wrestling when they took to the ring at Crown Jewel in Perth last year. However, Cena has now disclosed that fans were almost robbed of this experience as Styles wasn’t originally intended as his opponent for the premium live event. In the same interview, the Hollywood star added that Drew McIntyre was initially planned to face him.

“I tried to plan it as a year of creative experiences. You also have to be able to pivot. AJ [Styles] was supposed to be Drew [McIntyre]. We pivoted, but we wanted to give them a feel-good moment because they were listening to the data points. Like they listen to you guys. They do. It’s real,” Cena said.

Though it might be a case of recency bias, Cena and Styles’ match in Australia is regarded by many to be one of WWE’s greatest offerings of this decade.
