The world golf rankings have been updated following the U.S. Open, the third major championship of 2025. J.J. Spaun won the U.S. Open Sunday, the first major championship of his career.
As a result, let’s take a look at how much the world golf rankings have changed this week in the top 10, including where Spaun stands.
1. Scottie Scheffler
The World No. 1 continues to hold the top spot after his fourth top 10 finish at the U.S. Open in the last five years. Scottie Scheffler tied for seventh this week and had the chance to possibly raise the trophy if he had not missed a handful of short putts. However, that was part of the challenge Oakmont Country Club brought all week. Scheffler grinded over the final 36 holes to shoot even par in order to finish inside the top 10.

2. Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy did not have the same success as Scheffler. McIlroy was 8-over par after 21 holes following a double bogey on the par-4 third on Friday and was on the brink of missing the cut. However, the 2011 U.S. Open champion grinded his way back to the positive side of the cutline, shooting 2-under the rest of the way. That included making birdies on the par-4 15th and the par-5 18th to ensure that he was not leaving Oakmont early.
McIlroy played from behind, and a 4-over 74 Saturday pushed him back from trying to contend and be in the mix come Sunday. However, McIlroy did shoot the round of the day on Sunday with a 3-under 67, alongside Jon Rahm, another past U.S. Open champion.
3. Xander Schauffele
Like McIlroy, Xander Schauffele also played from behind going into the weekend, coming off a 4-over 74 in Friday’s second round. However, Schauffele was able to fight back, shooting even par over his final 36 holes to finish tied for 12th, capped off by a 1-under 71 in the final round.
While Schauffele wanted to contend, he still made history, becoming the third player since World War II to finish in the top 15 at the U.S. Open nine straight years, joining Sam Snead and Jack Nicklaus. It is also nine straight top 15s to begin his U.S. Open career, which speaks to his quality, being No. 3 in the world golf rankings.
4. Collin Morikawa
Collin Morikawa remains in the No. 4 position of the world golf rankings after placing tied for 23rd at the U.S. Open. Although Morikawa led the field in strokes gained approach and was top five in strokes gained off the tee, fairway accuracy and greens in regulation, putting killed the two-time major champion. Morikawa ranked 66th in strokes gained putting, adding more than two strokes to his score due to his work on the greens.
5. Justin Thomas
Justin Thomas also remains in his spot in the world golf rankings. Thomas was the highest-ranked golfer to miss the cut as he was among the handful of perennial faces not to play the weekend. Thomas has missed the cut in seven of the last 11 major championships dating back to the 2023 Masters.

6. Russell Henley
The No. 6 spot of the world golf rankings is where the movement begins. Russell Henley moved up one position following his tied-10th finish at 5-over par. Henley had no round worse than 2-over 72 all week. In addition, his only strokes gained numbers in the negatives came off the tee, adding 0.4 strokes to his score throughout the week. It marks Henley’s second straight top 10 finish at a U.S. Open and a bounce back after missing the cut at the first two majors this year.
7. Sepp Straka
Sepp Straka also moved up one spot in this week’s world golf rankings, despite missing the cut Friday. Straka did not record a birdie or better in the opening round, shooting 8-over 78. That put him behind the 8-ball going into the second round, especially with the conditions. Despite missing the cut at all three majors this year, Straka has excelled during the PGA Tour season with two wins while sitting at No. 3 in the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup standings.
8. J.J. Spaun
The U.S. Open champion moved up 17 spots to No. 8 in this week’s world golf rankings. Spaun, who is appearing in the top 10 for the first time in his career, had a week to remember, leading to his first major championship trophy. Spaun, who made one previous U.S. Open in 2021, became the sixth player in the last 100 years to win America’s National Championship in two or fewer starts.
One of his key shots in Sunday’s final round came on the par-5 12th when he got his third shot onto the green to set up a 40-foot birdie putt for his first of four birdies on the back nine. In addition, Spaun moved up 10 spots to No. 3 in the Ryder Cup standings, nearly ensuring his spot at Bethpage Black in September for Team USA.

9. Viktor Hovland
Viktor Hovland is coming off a U.S. Open where he came up short by a couple strokes, helping him climb five spots to No. 9 in the world golf rankings. Hovland, who played alongside Spaun in Sunday’s final round, lost by three to finish in third place. This result moved Hovland up to No. 9 in the world golf rankings. Sunday marked his fourth top five at a major championship and first since last year’s PGA Championship.
10. Ludvig Aberg
As a result of the movement, Ludvig Aberg was the corresponding drop, falling four spots from No. 6 to No. 10. Aberg missed the cut by one stroke as he did not record a birdie or better during the second round with six bogeys and 12 pars. The Swede struggled most Friday in strokes gained approach and strokes gained short game, ranking 115th in both categories. He also averaged more than two putts per hole, which set him back from trying to contend, let alone make the cut.
