For months, there had been speculation on Owens’ in-ring future, following his neck injury in 2025. He needed to undergo neck fusion surgery, and it remained unclear when or if at all he would return to WWE.

But not only did Kevin Owens show up in the ring, but he also looked smooth as ever and wasn’t hesitant to take bumps. He spoke to Sam Roberts on WWE’s SummerSlam Recap and talked about his recovery.

He mentioned how he watched new stars take over from the sidelines during his recovery.

“I’m 42 years old. We got the guys like Oba, Trick. The younger guys are coming up. I’m not that no more. Can I do sh*t I used to do? I don’t know. I don’t even know if I can run the ropes yet… Before my surgery, running the ropes was an arduous task. It was difficult,” he said.

The Prizefighter then shared his thoughts on the current product and the evolving wrestling style. He said fans do like the change, but he doesn’t understand it.

“As I watched, I thought, ‘Maybe I don’t know what this is anymore. Maybe I don’t have the mind for it.’ I don’t know. And quite frankly, I’d watch the show and go, ‘Man, people love this. I don’t get it.’ So maybe this has passed me by,” he added.

Kevin Owens thought WWE return may not happen

Kevin Owens spent quite a significant time away from the ring as he continued to heal from his neck injury.

Rumors and speculation around his in-ring future grew before his blockbuster SummerSlam return. Talking on the SummerSlam post-show, he said at one point during his recovery, he thought he would never return to the ring.

Kevin Owens said despite support from his family and friends, he was not okay with any of it, since his scans were coming out unsatisfactory until about a month ago.

He revealed it was only a few weeks ago that he started to see desirable scan results.
