Nothing gets MLB fans excited like a top prospect reaching the majors, and Jackson Holliday is the latest to get the call.
Two weeks into the 2024 season, the Orioles have summoned the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 MLB draft to the majors. He will make his big league debut Wednesday night against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Just 20 years old, Holliday is the son of seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday, who spent most of his 15-year career with the Rockies and Cardinals before retiring in 2018.
It took Matt nearly six years to make it to the majors after Colorado selected him in the seventh round of the 1998 draft, but Jackson has barreled through the Orioles’ farm system to earn his shot. He played at four different levels of the minors in 2023, slashing .323/.442/.499 for a .941 OPS with 30 doubles, nine triples, 12 home runs and 75 RBIs while also stealing 24 bases.
Many figured that showing and a strong 2024 spring training (.311 average, .954 OPS) would be enough to land Holliday a spot on Baltimore’s Opening Day roster, but the team sent him back to Triple-A Norfolk to start the season. After he reached base 27 times in 56 plate appearances, though, the Orioles made the call.
After playing mostly at shortstop last season, Holliday spent most of his short stint at Norfolk this year at second base. He figures to settle in there in Baltimore, forming a youthful double-play combination with 22-year-old shortstop Gunnar Henderson, the 2023 American League Rookie of the Year.
