SAN FRANCISCO — Grand Forks’ Carson Skarperud was consistent Tuesday on Day 2 at the U.S. Amateur.

The UND golfer shot an 81 — after shooting an 80 on Day 1 on Monday — to finish with a two-day total of 161 at the Olympic Club.

Skarperud, a former Grand Forks Red River standout, didn’t budge from his place in the field. He started the day in 304th and ended the day in 304th.

Skarperud, whose dad Tim Skarperud served as caddie, birdied No. 17 for his lone birdie of Round 2.

Skarperud was par on eight holes, was bogey on nine holes and shot a 7 for his worst hole of the day on No. 14.

Skarperud’s trip to the U.S. Amateur is a rarity in Grand Forks golf. According to a Herald article in 1988, Alan Thompson Jr. was believed to be the first local golfer to qualify for the tournament in 1983.

In 1996, Shane McMenamy qualified by winning the Junior Amateur. East Grand Forks native Nate Deziel qualified for the 2024 event by winning the Minnesota State Amateur.

In 1988, UND head men’s golf coach Todd Schaefer made the U.S. Amateur with a qualifying tournament in Hickson, N.D.

Miller has covered sports at the Grand Forks Herald since 2004 and was the state sportswriter of the year in 2019 (NSMA, NDAPSSA), 2022 (NSMA, NDAPSSA) and 2024 (NDAPSSA).

His primary beat is UND football but also reports on a variety of UND sports and local preps.
