Given to the most promising young player ever year under the age of 21, the award’s origins started in Italy and it’s pretty much the equivalent of the Ballon d’Or for youngsters.

Among this year’s contenders are the likes of Desire Doue, Pau Cubarsi and Lamine Yamal.

This time around though, Liverpool also have a pair of players in the running. Although one of them is unlikely to rise up the rankings before the award is handed out.

Giovanni Leoni is the first Liverpool nominee, but he’s not going to be playing for the rest of the year and probably for the rest of the season after his ACL injury.

The Italian is not the only wanted to be nominated from Liverpool. Armin Pecsi, who arrived in the summer, is also a contender due to his brilliant performances for Puskas Akademia prior to coming to Anfield.

Pecsi has not really seen a lot of action in the first-team just yet. He played 45 minutes in a friendly against Athletic Bilbao at Anfield but that’s about it.

Behind the scenes though he regularly participates in first-team training sessions and has been learning a lot from the likes of Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Only 20-years-old, for now he’s place is in the club’s U21 team. But that is obviously not his ultimate destination. The young goalkeeper will want to play at the highest possible level and in a recent interview with Spiler TV in Hungary, he confirmed that his plan is to play for the Reds’ senior team in the future.

“The goal is to be able to play here, at this club,” Pecsi said.

“There are people working here who help me to the fullest. I try to carry forward the good solutions from training, learn new things. It’s difficult because this is a higher level. I have to be patient and work in the meantime, and of course I have to wait for the opportunity. I reached a higher level, where I was faced with the fact that this is still a long way to go.

“If I train in this quality and with these players and if I do a good job, then I see the level I can reach. Maybe reach the level of the goalkeepers who are ahead of me, then I can have a role in such a league.”

Those are lofty ambitions for the young player but it’s exactly the attitude you would want from someone representing the football club.

Pecsi will have to bide his time and he may even have to go out on loan in the future but ultimately there is a pathway for him into the first-team.

Caoimhin Kelleher has proven that, Vitezslav Jaros currently on loan at Ajax is another excellent example to follow.
