Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders won’t be participating in the annual East-West Shrine Bowl next week, but this development didn’t keep the Giants from recently linking up with the top draft prospect who could soon become theirs.

New York’s braintrust spoke with Sanders during a Shrine Bowl practice on Saturday, as cameras caught general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll speaking to the young signal-caller off the field. It also wasn’t the first interaction between the parties this weekend — the Giants spent “significant time” with Sanders on Friday, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.

Sanders, who isn’t suiting up for any Shrine Bowl activities, spoke to the media on Saturday and called his meetings with the Giants “very exciting” and relationship with the team “great.”

The attention toward Sanders comes as no surprise, as the quarterback-needy Giants are in position to select him with the No. 3 pick this coming April. But it remains to be seen whether the Colorado star will be on the board when New York is on the clock. Drafting ahead of them are the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns, also in demand for a new leader under center.

While some draft analysts have questioned Sanders’ overall skillset and value as a first-round pick, conversations about the 22-year-old’s potential in the NFL aren’t going away. The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder threw for 4,134 yards with 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 13 games for the Buffaloes this past season. He also tied for 20th nationally in QBR (75.5) and amassed 124 touchdowns with just 27 interceptions across four collegiete seasons.

It’s unclear which situation Sanders truly prefers among his current suitors, but he wittingly expressed interest in the Giants last month. His custom-made cleats for Colorado’s appearance in the Alamo Bowl featured the team’s logo and colors.
