Jurgen Klopp‘s Liverpool beat Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea 1-0 to win the Carabao Cup.
At the conclusion of the final, which was decided by a Virgil van Dijk goal in the 118th minute after the Blues had had several chances before extra time, Gary Neville admitted he had “no sympathy for Chelsea” who he described as a “1 billion pound (1.17 billion) bottlejobs”.
According to Gary Neville, Manchester United legend turned TV analyst, Chelsea should have “rammed it straight down Liverpool’s throat” (with injuries and a lot of youngsters in the team) in extra time.
Liverpool played Bobby Clark (19), James McConnell (19), Jayden Danns (18), Jarell Quansah (21) and Harvey Elliott (20) in extra time.
Mauricio Pochettino’s reply to Gary Neville
Mauricio Pochettino did not hesitate to reply to former Valencia coach Gary Neville’s criticism: “I didn’t hear what he said, but if you compare the age of the two squads… I think it’s similar”.
“I have a good relationship with Gary Neville. I respect his opinion, but he knows that the dynamic (of Liverpool and Chelsea) is completely different. If he said that, I think it’s not fair to speak in this way,” the Argentine coach said.
In his speech after the defeat Pochettino stressed that “I feel proud. I am proud of the players, I think they made a great effort. We are a young team and there is nothing to compare with Liverpool just because they finished with some young players. I think it’s impossible to compare them.”
