Boxing promoter Frank Warren has said that super-featherweight Ryan Garner is “on the verge” of fighting for a world title.

‘The Piranha’ eased past Cristian Bielma on Saturday night, stopping his Mexican opponent in the third round of their contest at Dublin’s 3Arena.

After the contest, Warren shared how impressed he was with Garner’s performance and what could come next.

“He did everything that was asked of him tonight,” Warren said.

“He was right on point and when he had to step it up – which is what he did – he did it in great style.

“He’s there now, he’s on the verge of having a world title fight and he’s very capable of winning one.”

Bielma struggled to cause any problems for Southampton’s Garner during the contest and quickly had marks on his face after taking some punishing shots.

In the third round, the Mexican was backed into a corner where Garner let off a barrage of accurate shots to no reply which forced the referee to step in and end the contest.

Garner has long expressed his desire to headline a show in his hometown at St Mary’s Stadium, a dream that now seems closer than ever.

During fight week it was rumoured that he could face the winner of Saturday night’s main event this summer, but after Anthony Cacace’s win over James Dickens, the new WBA super-featherweight champion made it clear that his sights were on bigger contests.

“All respect to Ryan Garner, he is a great up-and-comer, but I’m looking at bigger names now,” Cacace said in the ring after the fight.

“I want to unify the division. Emanuel Navarrete next, in Saudi Arabia wherever it is I’m there.”

Navarrete is the current holder of the IBF and WBO world super-featherweight titles.

‘It’ll be a big fight’

Despite Cacace appearing to look at a different route away from Garner, Warren remained confident that he would still fight for a world title in the near future.

“We’ll see what happens, obviously all fighters want to unify the titles and I understand that,” he added.

“But Ryan will fight for a world title, we’ve pencilled in (a show in the south this summer) and that’s what we want to be doing.

“There’s a number of different options but whatever it is it’ll be a big fight and I hope it would be a world title fight.”

When asked if that show could be at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium, Warren replied: “Yep, that’s what we want to do.”
