The Ryder Cup is an absolute blast for golf fans thanks to its format — there are team-oriented events that test chemistry and teamwork. One of those is foursomes, which are the events that lead Friday and Saturday morning.

How does that work? What’s the format? We’re here to help. Here are the rules and how it works:

Team USA and Team Europe will each have two-man teams playing each other. They each alternate tee shots on each hole — that’s why the format is also known as “alternate shot” — and the team with the lowest score wins the hole.

How is foursomes different than four-ball?

Foursomes features the teams alternating their shots. In Four-ball, each of those pairs plays their own shot after they take them. The lowest score on each of those teams is counted and the lowest score between USA and Europe wins the hole.

That’s it! Enjoy the competition.
