The 28-year-old is signed through the 2029-30 season as part of a seven-year, $21 million contract he bound on July 1, 2023. The 6-foot-5 winger was placed on waivers at the start of the regular season, passing through the process ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.
The Islanders acquired Engvall from the Maple Leafs in 2023, who was drafted by the club 188th overall in 2014. After parts of three seasons with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, Engvall cracked the Leafs’ roster, amassing 42 goals and 45 assists over 243 combined regular and postseason games. On his current deal, he has a modified no-trade clause.

Engvall has struggled to find consistency. With three goals and six points in 20 games, his performance has not met the expectations set when he signed his long-term deal. Additionally, Engvall spent six games with the AHL’s Bridgeport Islanders this season, registering one goal.
In his tenure in Long Island, the forward has amassed 20 goals, 27 assists, and 47 points across portions of three regular and postseason games.
Dermott Claimed By Wild
In other news, former Maple Leafs defenseman Travis Dermott, who was placed on Waivers by the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday, was claimed by the Minnesota Wild, as reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
The move comes after the Wild placed defenseman Jacob Middleton on long-term injured reserve, prompting them to add Dermott as a reinforcement off the waiver wire.
Dermott signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Oilers after participating in training camp on a PTO this past offseason. The 27-year-old had zero points in 10 appearances with Edmonton while averaging 13:05 minutes of ice time per game. The Wild’s claim on him signals a fresh start for the defenseman, who will now look to carve out a role with Minnesota’s defensive unit.
A second-round pick (34th overall) by the Leafs at the 2015 NHL Draft, Dermott was a key contributor to the AHL’s Marlies, helping them win the 2018 Calder Cup. He spent parts of five seasons with the Maple Leafs in the NHL from 2017-2022, where he played in 273 regular and postseason games, recording 14 goals, 43 assists, and 57 points.

He was traded to the Vancouver Canucks at the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline in exchange for a third-round pick. After his time with the Canucks, Dermott signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Arizona Coyotes for the 2023-24 season before joining the Oilers this summer.
In 361 career NHL games, Dermott has 18 goals and 67 points split between the Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, Arizona Coyotes and Oilers.
