Speaking exclusively to GGFN, Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Mark Flekken has commented on building chemistry with his defence.
Leverkusen’s 2-0 win against Manchester City was highlighted by a strong defensive performance from the back three of Jarell Quansah, Loïc Bade and Jeanuel Belocian, as well as Flekken himself, who made nine saves (via FotMob) and won himself the Player of the Match for the game.

However, a large group of players are new to the team, and it takes time for there to be confidence and chemistry between the goalkeeper and the defence.
When asked by GGFN if having such a strong defence gives him confidence, Flekken said:
Definitely. But it’s, it’s the same the other way around. If the back line knows they have a goalkeeper behind them who can save the one shot that goes through them, those connections have to be built over time. Like I said before, you need time. You don’t always get time. So you have to be patient, you have to work hard, and you have to get to know each other. As quick as possible, but that doesn’t always, work out the way you want it to, to work out. So yeah. Patience. Patience is key. Patience and hard work.
Flekken’s mixed start to his Leverkusen career:
Like most players in the Leverkusen squad, former Freiburg and Duisburg keeper Flekken has not had the easiest start to life at the BayArena. However, in recent games, the Dutch international’s performances have been game-winning for die Werkself. Not only in the game against City, but against Wolfsburg last weekend, Flekken played a big role in helping Leverkusen secure the three points.

The 32-year-old will need to be at the top of his game at the weekend with Leverkusen hosting Borussia Dortmund in the league.
