HURON, S.D. — With a leading performance from Asher Dannenbring, the Mitchell High School boys golf team continued their strong start to the new season.

Dannenbring and the Kernels posted runner-up finishes at the Huron Invitational at Broadland Creek Golf Course on Thursday. As a team, Mitchell shot a cumulative score of 303 with all four counting golfers posting sub-80 rounds, sharing second place with Brandon Valley and finishing four strokes behind team champion Sioux Falls O’Gorman at 299.

On the individual leaderboard, Dannenbring was part of a four-way tie for second place at 2-over 74, carding a 2-under 34 on Broadland Creek’s front nine with three birdies against one bogey.

Other Kernel performances include Carter McCormick and Everett Morrison finishing tied for eighth place after shooting rounds of 4-over 76. Dawson Adams claimed a share of 14th following a 5-over 77, Matthew Mauszycki was tied for 44th at 85 and Canon Moller shot an 89 en route to finishing tied for 53rd.

O’Gorman’s Taten Mauney secured the medalist honors as the lone player in the 60-player field to break par, firing a 1-under 71 against Broadland Creek’s par-72 layout. Brandon Valley teammates Lincoln McInerney and Cooper Shuman, and O’Gorman’s Nick Simon all shot rounds of 2-over 74 to tie for second alongside Dannenbring.

In the team standings, Harrisburg was fourth with a 307 and Brookings completed the top-five by shooting a 308.

Mitchell will host the annual Marchand Cup team clash with Yankton at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at Lakeview Golf Course.
