“If you think I came to Mexico City to lose my title to a guy who broke his hand jerking it to his nine-day fluke title win, you got another thing coming,” Punk said.

It was later reported that Punk went off-script during the interview segment, and the comments about Sami Zayn’s title run were not part of the show’s original rundown. WWE later bleeped out Punk’s remarks about Zayn from the replay of this past week’s SmackDown on Netflix.

Punk shockingly lost the Undisputed WWE Championship to The Master Strategist after interference from Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae, and Kevin Owens. The Best in the World seemed unstoppable during his 67-day title run. Hence, his defeat caught many viewers by surprise.

Why Did WWE Book CM Punk to Lose the World Title on SmackDown?

Sami Zayn’s victory over CM Punk wasn’t clean. Kevin Owens inadvertently hit The Best in the World with the title belt, allowing Zayn to gain an unfair advantage. The Master Strategist ultimately delivered a vicious Helluva Kick to Punk and pinned him to capture the Undisputed WWE Championship.

A recent report by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter indicated that the USA Network wanted Punk to remain the top titleholder of SmackDown. Many within WWE were also against the idea of crowning Zayn champion again. However, the creative team went ahead with the title change for storyline purposes.

“With the Sami Zayn thing, the basic gist was they have a storyline that will make sense when you look back on it, is what I was told. When it’s all said and done this will all make sense. There was certainly people who were against it but they did it. And that was that.” (H/T – Cultaholic)

Fans must stay tuned to find out if Punk goes after Zayn’s gold in the coming weeks.
