Amazingly, some states are still counting votes from Nov. 5, but there’s more than congressional races hanging in the balance these days.

That’s right, you have until Thursday, Nov. 21, to vote (psst: for someone other than Chase Elliott!) for NASCAR’s most popular driver, an honor Elliott has won each of the past six years.

It’s in the bloodline, apparently, since dad Bill Elliott won the thing 16 times during his Hall of Fame career.

You can vote, and vote up to five times daily from a unique email address(!), at NASCAR.com or on the NASCAR mobile app.

Who’s leading the NASCAR most popular vote?

This past weekend, NASCAR released the top five vote getters so far. In alphabetical order: Ryan Blaney, Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, Martin Truex Jr.

A couple of weeks ago, the call went out from this corner to vote for someone other than Chase, who hasn’t exactly gone out of his way to stump for the continued honor. Not that a driver is obliged to kiss up to the fan base, but an occasional flash of excitement, bravado or even anger would be welcomed from the growing-ever-more-stoic William Clyde Elliott II.

Kyle Larson, maybe. Martin Truex, OK. But Kyle Busch for NASCAR Most Popular Driver award?

Not sure about Blaney, but you can make a case for Larson, who not only attempted the Indy 500 this year (hell, he led it!) but continues to race non-stop at off-Broadway short tracks between NASCAR weekends. Or Truex, who’s no ball o’ fire, but hey, he’s retiring and it would be a nice parting gift.

But Kyle Busch should be given strong consideration, given how he managed to become a sympathetic figure as he gamely fought for a race win that never came this year. He’s also obviously a supportive dad to son Brexton, who’s building his own racing career.

And a supportive husband. How else to explain his willingness to pose for an endless run of social-media pics choreographed in fine fashion by wife Samantha?
