Speaking last week at LIV Golf Singapore, Bryson DeChambeau said he was searching for a return to peak form — the kind of sharp, relentless version of himself capable of flirting with a number like the 58 he once shot at Greenbrier.

He hasn’t reached that territory yet, but the trajectory is becoming harder to ignore. On Saturday at LIV Golf South Africa, DeChambeau leaned on a pair of eagles to separate himself from the field, building a two-shot lead heading into the final round.

A 7-under 64 pushed him to 21 under par through three rounds, giving him a slim advantage over South African favorite Branden Grace — and another sign that the game he’s been chasing may be close at hand.

Jon Rahm is also in the mix, as he shot a 64 of his own on Saturday, and he sits three shots behind DeChambeau heading into the final round of play.

Rahm and DeChambeau have found themselves near the top of the leaderboards often in recent tournaments, with Rahm winning in Hong Kong and then DeChambeau taking the title in Singapore.

“It’s been fun,” Rahm said of the recent rivalry. “It’s interesting, none of us had the Sunday we wanted in Adelaide, and after that for both of us to win, I think it shows that we learned from certain mistakes. He’s been playing fantastic golf. It’s been incredible.

“When (DeChambeau) gets going, he’s a very difficult man to beat, but that’s what we’re here for. We want to play against the best competition, and the best usually get the best out of their playing partners.

“Hopefully, we can all come out like we did today and have a really fun Sunday with a lot of birdies.”
