With the Giants adding both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston this offseason, the expectation coming into camp was that rookie Jaxson Dart would serve as the team’s third string quarterback to start the year.

However, after taking big steps forward in both training camp and preseason action it appears that the youngster could potentially have already climbed up the depth chart a bit.

While he wasn’t ready to commit to exact roles speaking with reporters on Sunday, head coach Brian Daboll kept the door open to Dart serving as Big Blue’s backup quarterback behind Wilson to start the season.

That’d leave Dart one step from taking the reins and making his NFL debut.

“We’ll see,” Daboll said. “He’ll keep practicing and doing the things he needs to do to keep improving. Backup quarterbacks, we’ll have a number of them, so we’ll continue working with all of those guys.”

Though the head coach wasn’t ready to commit to Dart, he certainly looked the part.

The 22-year-old showed confidence and poise throughout the three-game preseason slate.

He completed 32-of-47 passes for 372 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 47 more yards and another score on the ground.

He did have a bit of an injury scare during Saturday’s finale against the Patriots, but was able to clear concussion protocol and finished his strong showing.

“Being a rookie QB is not easy,” Daboll said. “Being a quarterback in general is not easy. He knows he has a lot of things to work on, but he’s made progress every day. I’m glad we drafted him, I’m glad he’s our guy.”

New York also has a decision to make with Tommy DeVito, who had just three incompletions as he threw for 198 yards and three touchdowns during Saturday’s preseason finale.
