After years of coming up short in qualifying for golf’s national championships, Hortonville resident Brad Lanning has now done it two years in a row.
First, Lanning qualified for the 2023 U.S. Senior Open at SentryWorld in Stevens Point. He backed that up on Tuesday by shooting a 3-under 67 at Oconomowoc Golf Club to qualify for the 2024 major at Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island on June 27-30.
Lanning clinched one of three spots available with four-time PGA Tour winner and two-time PGA Tour Champions winner Duffy Waldorf and four-time PGA Tour champion Notah Begay III.
Begay III and Lanning were college teammates at Stanford University.
Lanning is the owner of Rise Up Golf, which helps young golfers navigate the collegiate recruiting process.
Mario Tiziani qualifies for U.S. Senior Open
University of Wisconsin alumnus Mario Tiziani played his way into the U.S. Senior Open by besting Cameron Percy in a playoff at Edinburgh Golf Course in Minnesota on May 14.
Tiziani, 53, is playing in the American Family Insurance Championship in Madison this weekend on a sponsor’s exemption. The 2002 Wisconsin State Open champion, Tiziani will play in fifth senior major championship but first U.S. Senior Open.
He just missed qualifying for the 2023 U.S. Senior Open at SentryWorld in Stevens Point.
Schultz, Ott, others fail to advance to U.S. Open
Milwaukee’s Jack Schultz shot a 4-under par 138 during a one-day, 36-hole U.S. Open qualifier on the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday, five shots out of a playoff for one of five spots in the 2024 U.S. Open.
Schultz was the top local finisher on the day in Ohio, as Wisconsin Badgers alumnus Coalter Smith fired a 2-under 140 and Harrison Ott (Brookfield) and Thomas Longbella (Chippewa Falls) each shot an even-par 142. Ty Kretz of Marinette finished 4-over.
At the qualifier at Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ohio, Madison’s Joe Leonard finished 11-over par.
Marquette University alumnus Hunter Eichhorn shot an impressive 8-under 136 on the Lakeside Course at The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Georgia. But, he was four shots out of a playoff for one of three spots in the U.S. Open.
