• BMW will begin putting it on all its models starting next month.
  • The automaker introduced a new logo on the iX3.
  • BMW will also reveal a new M logo.

Did you know BMW quietly introduced a new roundel logo? Well, beginning next month, every BMW will wear the updated logo. The automaker introduced its new look last September on the iX3, and the differences are subtle.

The roundel itself is mostly unchanged, but the hues and textures are slightly different. There’s no inner chrome circle, for example, and the overall design looks flatter. BMW design boss Oliver Heilmer explained the changes to BMW Blog, saying:

‘We wanted to keep the heritage, but bring more precision to the logo. The chrome is still there, the letters have been refined with a shiny pattern you often find in watches, and the white surfaces now sit closer to the outer ring. It’s flat, but when you touch it you can still feel the ridges.’

BMW is also updating its M performance logo, which will begin appearing on vehicles in February. It’s unclear exactly what changes BMW has planned, but if the roundel is any indication, it could be another very subtle styling tweak.

BMW introduced a new logo in 2020 alongside the one it had had since 1997. You can see the evolution here. It also introduced a black-and-white logo for elite models in 2017.

Motor1’s Take: BMW has tweaked its logo numerous times since its inception and has made only subtle changes in the last 100-plus years. The automaker might classify this as a new logo, but it’s not as drastic a change as we have seen from other brands. We doubt most people would have noticed either way.
