After losing the United States Championship, Ilja Dragunov did not go looking for a rematch immediately. He told Hayes that he would want to deserve a shot at the title before he faced him again, but he felt that he was not there yet. Hayes informed him last week that he would not always be the champion and there was no telling if he’d get another shot. That finally convinced the star to face Hayes on tonight’s episode of WWE SmackDown for the United States Championship.
While there was respect between the stars, that did not make the bout any less hard-hitting, as they decided to give it their all throughout the bout. Dragunov even countered the First 48 from Carmelo, and he followed it up with the H-Bomb.
Both stars were giving it their all, and Ilja hit him with the German Suplex. Carmelo was not left behind either, as the star turned the superplex into a mid-air cutter.
In the end, Carmelo Hayes was able to reverse the Torpedo Moscow and got a roll up for a pinfall at the end. Hayes remained the US Champioon and is going to resume the Open Challenges. The match ending in a roll up remains a huge upset after the match.
