Angel Gomes on Mason Greenwood: “He’s a bit like a little brother to me”

Angel Gomes (24) had his first press conference as an Olympique de Marseille player this afternoon following his free transfer from Lille OSC. During this, the England international was asked about his relationship with Mason Greenwood (23).

The two players both graduated from the Manchester United youth system, with Gomes making his professional debut for the club in 2017, and Greenwood following suit two years later in 2019. Gomes left United in 2020 when he joined Lille OSC, while Greenwood joined Marseille from United last summer.

Gomes explained, “I’ve spoken to Mason on the phone several times. He’s a bit like a little brother to me. We met when we were eight, when we played together at the youth level. Starting so young and ending up at a professional club together is rare and beautiful… I can’t wait to share these moments with him in Marseille.”

Greenwood was charged in 2022 with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault. Those charges were dropped in 2023 due to the withdrawal of key witness evidence and testimony.

Angel Gomes joins growing list of English players in La Provence

Gomes joins a growing contingent of English players at Marseille (Greenwood has now officially changed his international allegiance to Jamaica), with Jonathan Rowe and CJ Egan-Riley both at the club.
