The match ended in defeat for the WWE Hall of Famer, but he remained in Las Vegas to accompany boxer Ryan Garcia for the ceremonial weigh-in ahead of his WBC Welterweight Title defense against Conor Benn on Saturday, 12th September.

Rey Mysterio was draped in the Mexican flag and posed for the fans, as Garcia proceeded to face off against Benn. The fight is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Zuffa Boxing and will take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Notably, Garcia was recently associated with WWE. The boxer made an appearance on the July 27 episode of RAW. He appeared during a live in-ring concert segment that involved Joe Hendry and Danhausen.

After initially joining the duo in the ring and dancing, Garcia attacked Hendry with a guitar to his back and aligned himself with The Judgment Day. His appearance was seen as a way to promote his fight with Conor Benn.

However, WWE came under fire for having Garcia on the show. Fans slammed another celebrity being involved and also questioned why they had to bring in a controversial figure like Garcia.

In 2024, the boxer was expelled by the WBC after he repeatedly used racial slurs during a social media livestream. It came at a time when he was already serving a one-year suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, ostarine.

Later, it was reported that WWE won’t be having Garcia back, and the boxer also addressed the controversy around his appearance. Talking to ESNews, he said that he wouldn’t have received this much hate online had the WWE creative used him differently.

Rey Mysterio shares an update on retirement plans

Rey Mysterio is still going strong in the ring, having spent nearly four decades as a performer. And the way he’s moving, he isn’t looking to slow down anytime soon.

Recently, in an interview with BANG Showbiz, he was asked whether he has a retirement date in mind, having previously said that stopping at 50 was possible.

The 51-year-old legend said that earlier things were a little stressful due to the scheduling, but now the situation has eased for him. He said he is enjoying his current role where he’s competing on RAW occasionally and also serving as AAA’s general manager.

Rey Mysterio said he is going to “wing it” and see where the road takes him, refusing to put a timeline on his possible retirement.
