“Also, here’s the tricky part about that. We’re not allowed to spit on each other. That’s one of the things on TV; you can’t do that. They don’t want that,” Owens said (6:14 onwards).

The first time it was done unscripted, and Kevin Owens had to let it slide. However, bringing it back again seemed unnecessary for him. This solidified WWE’s approach to keep its rulebook stringent. An example of that sort of “major rule” happened with Tama Tonga too. He was fined for posting a clip of their SmackDown rehearsals without WWE’s permission.

Even Kevin Owens’ storyline sees a real-life censor to avoid controversy on TV

WWE SmackDown recently had a tense confrontation between Kevin Owens and CM Punk. Their rift goes way back to their ROH days but would not be brought back to their promos in their rivalry ahead.

Adding fuel to their recent exchange, though, color commentator Wade Barrett revealed on air that broadcast teams were explicitly instructed not to reference the legitimate history and real-life heat between the two veterans.

Producer Joe Feeney spoke about the feud during an episode of the Keepin’ It 100 podcast.

“Punk didn’t like Owens for the shape he was in and that Kevin would wrestle in a T-shirt,” Feeney said. “He kind of wanted him to wrestle in a singlet, and the word got back to Kevin. So he wrestled a match in a singlet. It was against Vordell Walker, and the match wasn’t good according to Owens, and then he came back to the locker room, and he said jokingly to Punk, ‘Are you happy now?’ or something, and Punk got in his face, but that’s really it.”

While Punk served as a prominent star in ROH, Owens (then Kevin Steen) was establishing himself as a mainstay in CZW while also attempting to make his mark in ROH. At the time, Punk openly took issue with Owens’ unconventional wrestling physique and his preference for competing in a T-shirt. To infuriate Punk, though, he wrestled in a singlet and asked whether he felt better now.
