Before he became a menacing heel named Gunther, he was going by the name of Walter, which also happens to be his real name, Walter Hahn. He went from his old name to his current name in 2022 when he was still a part of the NXT roster.

Wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer has now shed light on why he had his name changed and how it had everything to do with Vince McMahon. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, he wrote:

“The reason for the change was Vince. He believed that people might start calling him Wally and that is not a name he wanted for a main event foreign menace heel.”

Nick Aldis praised for Gunther rivalry

WWE Hall of Famer Jeff Jarrett has said that he thinks Nick Aldis is the reason why Gunther has so much hype around him.

The SmackDown general manager is set to take on the former NXT star in a grudge match at SummerSlam next month. The two stars have been in a simmering feud for the last few months that has now boiled over.

Speaking on his My World Podcast, Jarrett praised Aldis for keeping the hype around the erstwhile Walter.

“Lord, there’s proof that I’ve been high on Nick Aldis for 10 years. I’m so personally happy, he’s a Nashvillian and has been quite a while … the chatter that is being created around GUNTHER right now may be the most chatter he’s had, and correct me if I’m wrong, please do, since he retired Cena. And so, if the story’s there, the story’s there. Which is cool,” said Jarrett.

It seems likely that the Austrian will win his match against Nick Aldis at SummerSlam. Regardless, it will be a great match between the two stars.
