He was supposed to put his gold on the line against Cody Rhodes, but the match got canceled after Gunther seemingly injured the American Nightmare during a backstage attack.

Throughout the show, Adam Pearce worked on finding a new challenger for Sami Zayn. He made several phone calls, but couldn’t get the job done. Just moments before the main event, Nick Aldis stepped up and sealed the deal for him.

As Sami Zayn was waiting for his opponent in the ring, WWE cut to the arena, where CM Punk was shown entering the building. The Second City Saint went on to dethrone the Canadian wrestler in his first match back since WrestleMania 42.

Sami Zayn’s Undisputed WWE Championship reign lasted just over a week. Shortly after, WWE took to its official X handle to announce that CM Punk will be returning to SmackDown this Friday.

It looks like the creative has big plans in place for the Straight Edge Superstar.

According to Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer, WWE could turn CM Punk heel heading into the Biggest Party of the Summer.

“Cody’s a babyface. Sami [Zayn] is gonna end up being Daniel Bryan here. I think we may finally get that CM Punk heel turn because the story here is basically he’s a hypocrite. He’s everything that he complained about. Remember that promo he did, where he goes, ‘I’m always here,’ you know, unlike these Roman Reigns… Then he went home in April, disappeared until July 6th, and then waltzed in and took that belt, and obviously this is all storyline, but like in storyline he’s everything that he’s complained about for decades, you know, these guys, that just, you know, older guys coming in, taking stuff, not working, I mean, that’s that’s what happened here. So he’s going to Smackdown, I think he might be [turning heel].”

Punk has been a babyface for almost 13 years, having last played a heel character back in 2012-13. He is rumored to face his friend Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam, a match that has been brewing for quite some time.

Will the two men come face-to-face this Friday? Only time will tell.
