Cody Rhodes was supposed to face Sami Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Championship. He qualified by defeating Jey Uso last week, but at the start of the show tonight, he was blindsided by none other than Gunther, who was still sore about losing his title match at Night of Champions.

The Ring General assaulted Rhodes and left him unable even to stand, before security was able to separate them.

Former SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis was very upset with Pearce, who had momentarily replaced him as the SmackDown General Manager, after he got into an argument with Gunther at Night of Champions. There was hope that before the main event of the Undisputed WWE Championship match, Rhodes would recover in time to wrestle. Unfortunately, after he was taken to the hospital, WWE announced that Rhodes had been removed from the title match altogether.

Zayn had been getting ready for his match and was happy to learn that he did not need to defend his title, but he celebrated too early. Adam Pearce interrupted him and made it clear that the title would still be on the line in the main event.

When Zayn asked who he would be facing, Pearce refused to answer, just saying Cody Rhodes was being replaced.

As a result, with a replacement announced, Zayn has no choice but to prepare for a match against someone he doesn’t know he is facing.

The future of Rhodes is uncertain at this time, with the star likely to be unhappy about losing out on the title shot he earned.
