A lot of fans thought they were WWE lifers, but as it turns out, this wasn’t the case. Multi-time tag team champion Matt Hardy shared a similar sentiment when talking about The New Day leaving the sports entertainment giant.

Speaking on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, he talked about his initial reaction when he first heard the news.

“Shock. It was definitely shocking. The New Day has been such a staple of WWE, and you think they’re going to be WWE lifers, no doubt about it. And the last thing you expect is, as popular and as prominent as they still are right now, they’re going to be gone from WWE. It was very, very shocking to hear,” he said.

Hardy was then asked whether he was still surprised given the changes that TKO has implemented that have seen quite a few veterans either leave or be sidelined. The former WWE tag team champion said given how big of stars Kingston and Woods are, it still took him by surprise.

“They were such big stars on a high level. It was shocking. I’m surprised they didn’t really try to figure out some way to make it work,” he added.

Update on why The New Day decided to leave WWE

The New Day had been stuck in a creative rut ever since losing the WWE tag team titles last year. They were paired with Grayson Waller and featured in some segments, feuding with general manager Adam Pearce, but it went nowhere.

In the recent edition of Wrestling Observer Newsletter (WON), Dave Meltzer noted that Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods were on a list of stars who didn’t have significant future plans on WWE TV.

Hence, they were put in a position where they would’ve eventually been cut but were offered less money to stay and wind down their careers. In the end, Kingston and Woods chose to walk away rather than accept this offer.
