The Kansas City Chiefs are set to hold their first day of OTAs on May 26. Will quarterback Patrick Mahomes be able to participate in those workouts as he continues his recovery from a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee?

Chiefs coach Andy Reid was asked about the possibility at Kansas City’s rookie minicamp on May 2. The 68-year-old coach was initially noncommittal about the star participating in the early stages of the sessions.

“We’re gonna see on that,” Reid told reporters.

But Reid seemed optimistic that Mahomes would be able to get on the field at least in some capacity.

“He is in a good position to be able to do some things,” Reid said.

Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff chances end with Patrick Mahomes injury

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) is attended to by team medical staff following an injury during the fourth quarter against the Los Angeles Chargers at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. on Dec 14, 2025.

Reid went on to explain that Mahomes’ participation may be dictated by the rules and regulations the Chiefs have to follow if they want to be able to place the 30-year-old quarterback on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list at the start of training camp.

“Once you start the clock, then the clock’s gotta be rolling,” Reid said. “You just have to evaluate what you want to do there.”

Reid also explained that the nature of Phase 2 of the NFL’s offseason program – which contains no live contact or offense vs. defense reps – will make it easier for Mahomes to participate in some capacity.

“He’s in a position where he can do everything, I think,” Reid said.

When Kansas City’s OTAs begin, Mahomes will be just over five months removed from the knee injury he suffered during the Chiefs’ 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers during Week 15 of the 2025 NFL season on Dec. 14.

Mahomes has posted brief highlights of his rehab progress to his social media accounts during the offseason. Most recently, he posted a four-second clip of himself throwing a football at an indoor facility in late March.

Reid said he wasn’t privy to the exact nature of Mahomes’ workouts but credited the three-time Super Bowl winner with the work he is putting into his rehab.

“I know he’s doing a lot of stuff right now,” Reid said of Mahomes. “That’s what I can give you. He is throwing the ball. He does it on his own, so he’s not getting in any trouble here.”
